Bertie County Community Economic Development Planning

On Saturday, February 8, 2014 the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise hosted a meeting of economic development and workforce development leaders in Windsor, NC.  The goal of the meeting was to discuss the draft Community Economic Development Plan, prioritize recommendations and continue on the path toward implementation.  Attendees included representatives from the Choanoke Area Development Association, Martin and Roanoake-Chowan Community Colleges, Cooperative Extension, North Carolina Partnership for Children and the Office of Senator Burr.  Non-profits and church affiliates, Bertie County Economic Development Board, non-traditional education leaders, Region Q Workforce Development Board, Federal Deposit Insurance Cooperation, and local entrepreneurs also participated. There was an overwhelming consensus that more workforce preparation and testing should be offered including Career Readiness Certificate (CRC), GED and financial education.  Attendees suggested an innovative collaboration amongst community-based groups, nonprofits or religious organizations, community colleges and the school system could be utilized in order to increase the numbers of people reached.  There were also calls for better county-wide communication and coordination to ensure inclusion of people from different socioeconomic and demographic backgrounds.  In the coming weeks, the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise will be drafting the full Community Economic Development Plan in continued partnership with the people of Bertie County.
