May 10, 2016 – Chapel Hill, NC – The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise held its semi-annual Board of Advisors Reception and Dinner on April 28. This event celebrates the student leaders who make an impact on the Kenan Institute’s research and other work in its core focus areas: entrepreneurship, economic progress and global commerce.
At the reception, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School students who serve as Kenan Institute Leadership Fellows were recognized for their work. Additionally, the Rollie Tillman Outstanding Leadership Award was presented to Tony Morash (MBA ’16). The Kenan Institute Impact Award was presented to Terrell Wells, an East Carolina University MBA student who works with NCGrowth.
The Rollie Tillman Outstanding Leadership Award is named for Dr. Rollie Tillman, former UNC Kenan-Flagler Professor of Marketing and the Kenan Institute’s founding director. The Tillman award recognizes a graduating Kenan Institute Leadership Fellow who has demonstrated superior leadership through his or her contributions to different Institute domain initiatives.
Morash served as a Legacy Representative and the Consulting Club President for the MBA student body at UNC Kenan-Flagler. He fully immersed himself in multiple opportunities with the Kenan Institute and led his peers while collaborating closely with professors. He led a team of five Undergraduate Business and MBA students to conduct research on this topic and present the findings at UNC’s annual Basketball Analytic Summit. Morash also emerged as a leader among his peers, working with Kenan Institute Director of Outreach Lingmei Howell to develop the proposed “KILF 3.0” program. He consulted with his classmates, Kenan Institute staff and multiple advisors to construct the desired end state of the Kenan Institute Leadership Fellows Program. With the help of his peers, Tony identified goals for the program, and a year later, the team has already achieved four of the six goals.
Wells received the Kenan Institute Impact Award for his work with NCGrowth. The award recognizes a student who has made a significant impact on the Kenan Institute through work on projects and participation in various activities that drive the Kenan Institute’s mission and has an impact on UNC and the community. Wells completed two projects with NCGrowth, and has worked closely with executives at local companies (a powerboat manufacturer and family-owned cleaning company) to make their operations more efficient and organized. He has worked tirelessly to further the mission of NCGrowth by helping businesses create jobs and allow communities to create sustainable and equitable opportunities for their people.
“We are proud to honor our students and staff, and want to congratulate all of our Leadership Fellows as well as Tony and Terrell for their efforts to advance the Kenan Institute mission and bring research, action, and economic prosperity to local communities and beyond,” says Dr. Gregory Brown, Kenan Institute director and professor of finance.
