NCGrowth Attends the Annual Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Powwow to Measure Economic Impact

The annual Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians powwow is primarily a cultural gathering but it also has a measurable impact on the state economy, drawing in visitors from across the country. NCGrowth engaged the EBCI on a project to estimate the total economic impact of the powwow, held in Cherokee, NC from June 29-July 1, 2018.  A team of NCGrowth analysts spent the weekend at the event surveying visitors and vendors about their spending on transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment throughout their trip. Utilizing the economic modeling software IMPLAN, our team conducted an impact analysis, estimating the total effect of visitor spending and event expenses. The final report provides these figures to the Tribe along with an analysis of affected industries, and recommendations on how to increase the event’s impact.
