NCGrowth hosted a networking lunch and tour of Cape Fear Vineyard & Winery on August 11th in Elizabethtown. Business and local government clients, community resource providers, state government representatives and NCGrowth Analysts hired from UNC-Pembroke, Duke, NC State, NC Central and UNC-Chapel Hill attended.
Cape Fear Vineyard & Winery was an NCGrowth client in the Spring of 2016; Analyst Ben Holmes developed their marketing strategy through the Entrepreneur Technical Assistance Program (E-TAP). This unique wedding venue is located on 13 acres in the Bladen County Industrial Park. It opened in April and features a fine dining restaurant, lakeside lodging, art & collectibles, and event spaces. The facility has a variety of animals including llamas, peacocks, swans, ducks and miniature horses. Alex Munroe, owner of Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery has plans to continue expanding the venue.
Venkat Kuppuswamy, professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, was the featured speaker at the event and gave a presentation on his research on crowdfunding – a timely topic with the recent passage of crowdfunding legislation in NC (http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2016/07/22/its-official-gov-signs-off-onn-c-crowdfunding-law.html). Olivia Marx, Director of New Business Development for P & A Group, Art Jackson, Executive Director of Greene County Economic Development Commission and Chuck Heustess, Executive Director of Bladen County Economic Development Commission each spoke about their respective organizations and experiences with rural economic development.
